Whale Fall or Song to Dance With My Death

“Whale Fall or Song To Dance With My Death” is a performance about the taboo of death in everyday life, the process of eliminating funeral rites in Western capitalist societies, silence, and denial. Yet, above all it is a performance about life inspired by the death of actress Bruna Longo's father. Co-directed by Vitor Julian, the production has been acclaimed by audiences and critics in São Paulo, Brazil. Staged within the historic St Cuthbert’s Church, filled with echoes of its centuries-old graveyard, the show is a contemplation of mortality; a ritual inspired by Longo’s own experience of loss and grief.

Acclaimed in Brazil for combining glass bottles with unicycles and bicycles to create stunning circus performances, São Paulo artist Guilherme Torres brings Vidrado to Edinburgh this August for its UK Premiere. A dreamlike traveler determined to scale a great mountain, Guilherme takes audiences on a high-energy, jaw-dropping journey filled with gravity-defying feats of balance, athleticism and courage.

The Last Drop

Cynthia wakes one morning to find that sunrise has been obscured by a new apartment building. Her husband Gilberto is already awake, fixed to his phone and news of an ongoing general strike. Having benefitted from the historic success of housing construction, they spend their days bickering about neighbours and doctors appointments, living in a building that feels increasingly hollow. As secrets from the building’s past emerge, “The Last Drop” unfolds in both comedy and horror, its performers given licence to pursue either genre on a given night.

One Million Words

15 years ago, Ivo Müller was a school teacher looking for ways to inspire and connect his classroom. Scouring the shelves of a local library, he came across several copies of Rilke’s “Letters to a Young Poet”, beginning a relationship with the author that would come to define his artistic practice. The letters are luminous, detailing Rilke’s journey to reconstruct an understanding of being and solitude. Observing his young students as constantly connected, yet profoundly lonely, Müller sees a space for contemplation in Rilke’s words: what potential might they have to foster empathy and genuine human connection?

The repertoire theatrical collective Cênica returns to the Edinburgh Fringe with a brand new show - a celebration of the historic cultural exchange between Brazil and Scotland, told through the beautiful game. What begins as the story of a Scottish immigrant, Charles Miller, and his legacy as a pioneer in Brazilian football transforms into a mediation on Scotland and Brazil, their relationship, and their similarities and contentions. Documenting the five matches played between the two countries over the decades, “Dribble” is an intelligent theatre work about intercultural bonding and the magic of the sport.

Circo Valise

In a not-too-distant past, a mysterious lady elephant meets a traveling salesman. She hands him a magical suitcase with a tiny circus troupe inside. Since then, the salesman has carried the “Circo Valise” with him - and after a very long journey, he has finally made his way to Edinburgh. Little does he know that after many years and performances, a surprise awaits him this summer… Created and performed by Eduardo Salzane, acclaimed Brazilian automaton artist, the circus lives inside a mechanical suitcase which opens to reveal a ringmaster, clowns, and acrobats who take the stage, one after another.

Border Bodies

Acclaimed Brazilian dance company T.F. Cia de Dança presentes an innately collaborative ‘urban contemporary’ dance piece, centred on exploring the beautiful and vast heterogeneity of humankind, and our intrinsic need to connect. Created by Igor Gasparini, the show, performed by seven dancers of different backgrounds, blends urban dance techniques and contemporary perspectives to create a complex work that sees our current emotional, social, gendered, racial, psychological, historical, and geographical borders dismantled to form new ideas of togetherness and unity.

116 Grams: A Play To Lose Weight

The show is based on performer Letícia Rodrigues’ own life story: a fat girl who dreamed of being Britney Spears and, even after so many years, cannot be Britney Spears, and cannot seem to be anything that is not her weight. Beneath the calculations, the circuits and the sweat, Leticia’s investigation leads her to the essential question: is she a modern, chained Prometheus, or rather a whale out of water, gasping for breath? The only thing that seems to matter is the need to shrink, to kill, half of this body that occupies more space than it should - according to society, advertising, and the world.

SÃO PAULO SHOWCASE

Following its first appearance at the Fringe in 2025, when it presented six productions at the festival, São Paulo Showcase returns to Edinburgh with eight shows, including the languages ​​of theatre, dance and circus. Featuring solo performances that explore themes such as poetry, dreams, the body and grief, and group works that address Brazilian identity, the power of unity and the chaos of cities, the project occupies spaces in the venues Assembly, Dance Base, Pleasence, St. Cuthbert’s Church, Underbelly and Zoo. São Paulo Showcase is an initiative of the Government of the State of São Paulo, through the Secretariat for Culture, Economy and Creative Industries, with resources from the Aldir Blanc federal law. Management and production are handled by the social organization APAA.
